THE PAST INFORMS THE PRESENT AND FUTURE
Timothy (Tim) O’Neil is a lifelong, fourth generation, Southbury resident, whose family settled in Southbury in the early 1900s.

In the late 1930s, during FDR’s Work Projects Administration Program, the State of CT purchased land that was owned by Tim’s family, and built much of the Southbury Training School, a facility for those with psychiatric and mental challenges.

Tim’s great grandfather, Sidney S. Platt II served as a State Representative for the Southbury district for several years. He and his wife Ruth Scoville raised their children in Southbury in a Colonial farmhouse at the base of Flag Swamp Road. The farm at one point encompassed much of the land of the Southbury Training School.

Tim’s grandmother, Edith Platt, married Edward Hveem, also a lifelong Southbury resident. Edward served as First Selectman of Southbury in 1967 and was instrumental in the development of the town and of Heritage Village.
Edward became the Southbury Training School Farm Manager, which in turn led to Tim spending much of his childhood on the Training School farm, and later during high school summers, as a farm employee. Both of Tim's grandfather's were lifelong Republicans.

EDUCATION AND FAMILY VALUES
Tim attended Southbury elementary schools and graduated from Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, CT in 1979. He graduated from the University of San Diego in CA, where he obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a Major in Accounting.
Tim began his career working for a software development company in CA, before deciding to move back to CT to be closer to family. He soon met his future wife, Mary, and the two have now been married for 37 years. The couple built their home in Southbury where they raised their two children, Kelsey, and Christopher. Tim's three-year-old granddaughter is now the sixth generation family member being raised in Southbury.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY SERVICE
In 1989, after having worked for a commercial property management company, Tim started his own outdoor property management company, Green Thumb Lawns, which he owned and operated for more than 30 years.

After selling his business, Tim obtained a certification as a realtor and gained a National Certification in Property Management for commercial and residential communities. He is currently employed as a Certified Property Manager with Associa, the leading community management service company worldwide.
He is a member of the National Association of Realtors, Community Association Institute, The Community Association Managers International Certification Board, and has completed courses in Financial Management, Facilities Management, Community Leadership, Risk Management, and Community Governance.

Tim has served with distinction as a member of the Southbury Board of Selectmen since January 2024.
As a community activist, Tim spent more than 15 years volunteering with Parks and Recreation as a youth basketball coach and with Southbury Youth baseball. He has also been involved with Southbury Land Trust and the Southbury Training School. He served as a member of the Southbury Historical Society, and the Southbury Parks & Recreation Commission.

With a history of civic service ingrained in Tim’s spirit and family history, he is now prepared to dedicate himself to the town of Southbury, the home he loves, as its First Selectman.
